Founded in 1873 Sunderland RFC, the home of rugby in Sunderland, this year celebrates one hundred and forty years. Based at Ashbrooke Sports Club, it has a long and distinguished history and heritage, of which it has every right to be proud. Our dedicated team of coaches, volunteers, parents and players look back to that heritage to drive the club forward, develop our rugby sections and promote our sport throughout the wider community.
The Rugby club is divided into various sections, and the sport is played at Ashbrooke right down from the senior sides Under 12's through to the Colts. Their is also a vibrant mini rugby section coaching girls and boys from the age of six. We recently formed our first Ladies Team 'The Flames' who will be playing their first full season this year. All abilities are catered for, and anyone is encouraged to come along and give the game of rugby a try.
The section runs its own website, which contains all club documents, fixtures and results, photos, and news. There is a discussion board, and individual contacts can be found there, so feel free to have a look, and get in touch if you have any queries, or would like to come down to training and give it a go!
FOOTNOTE: Keith Gregson, local historian and long-standing Ashbrooke member, has recently published a book – “One Among Many” – documenting the history of the rugby club in its social and historical context, and as part of the wider Ashbrooke Sports Club. For more information on the book, and details of where it can be purchased, head to the rugby club website linked above.
