Over the next four years, the First World War Memorial Board will be used to recall the efforts of members of the then Sunderland Cricket and Football Club who served between 1914 and 1918.
The individual case studies will be based on the list of those who died during the conflict and those who were given awards for bravery and service. These lists appeared originally in To Ashbrooke and Beyond when it was published in 1963 and cover over 80 individuals.
Further research in the club’s membership and minute books reveals that over 250 club members past and present joined the forces so some of those not mentioned in the book may also feature.
