Sunderland Cricket Club has a long and proud history as part of Ashbrooke Sports Club. In the last century, it played host to international touring teams on numerous occasions, with the South Africans and Australians each attracting huge crowds – tens of thousands – on their visits to the club. In more recent times, the tradition of cricket at Ashbrooke has continued.
The club, in the years of the Durham Senior League, was hugely successful, and was one of the founder members of the North East Premier League, which it won in its first season, 2000. The club has a selection of teams, and caters for all ages and abilities.
For the seniors, there are four teams, each playing one competitive game a week; indoor nets usually start after Christmas, and outdoor nets during the season are generally held in the evening, twice a week, for anyone who wants to come down.
On the junior side of things, there is a thriving section, with ages ranging from under-11 to under-18. During the summer, the Friday evening and Sunday morning sessions attract kids from six or seven years old, and whether you want to come down to play for a team, or just to learn the game, Sunderland Cricket Club is the place to be!
